ADAPT stands for Adoptable Dogs After Prisoner Training.  ADAPT dogs are provided by your Humane Society, and are obedience trained by inmates from New River O-Unit, a Florida Department of Corrections facility located in Bradford County.  The first graduation ceremony was held on August 1, 2011, the second on September 26, 2011,  the third on November 21, 2011.  The fourth class is comprised of youngs dogs and will graduate on Monday, January 23, 2012.  All animals in the program have been screened for health and temperament, and spend eight weeks in obedience training at the prison.  The inmates in the program receive not only the tangible benefits of learning certifiable skills in the handling, care, and training of the animals from a master dog trainer, Jay King, but also the intangible benefits of the unconditional love of a dog – something they would not normally experience in a correctional setting.  Our dogs benefit not only from the training they receive, but also from the extensive daily interaction with humans (socialization) provided by the program – a direct contrast to shelter life.  Everyone wins, including potential adoptive families.  A dog that is crate trained, housebroken, obedience trained, well socialized and healthy ensures a more successful forever family relationship. To adopt an ADAPT graduate, call us at (386) 325-1587.

Class 2 graduated on Monday, September 26, 2011. Click here to take a look at these beautiful...and well mannered...future best friends.

Missy has found her forever home. Bonny is still available from Class 1 and Frisky and Lexi from Class 2. Class 3 graduated on November 21 and we still need forever homes for Rolanda and Eclipse.

Mike DePriest and DePriest AirConditioning and Heating have come to our rescue once again.  After donating a replacement air conditioner (and labor) for the stolen Thrift Store A/C unit back in late summer, they have now resurrected a defunct heating system for our kennel runs.  In addition to a new heater, Mike and his crew installed all new duct work for a nominal fee that MAY have covered his out-of-pocket for permits and metal.

Thanks also to Danny Buchanan for building a great "cage" for our new air conditioner!
